Hampton Roads is often referred to as the Tidewater region or the seven cities. Geographically, in North Carolina and Virginia, the Tidewater area is the land between the Suffolk Scarp and the Atlantic Ocean. In Maryland, the Tidewater area is the flooded river areas below the Fall Line. The Hampton Roads area of Virginia or the Seven Cities is considered to be a Tidewater region.

The Tidewater area has tons of traffic backup each day mainly due to the tunnel traffic. Tunnels that go under the ocean and connect landmass. For some reason, people always get into car accidents in underwater tunnels. The Tidewater region of Hampton Roads is home to a few major US military bases which is why there are some many people and so much traffic. The traffic in the Tidewater area is often compared to the traffic in New York City.
