The cities that are located in Hampton Roads are referred to by many locals as "The Seven Cities" or "The Seven Cities of Tidewater". When the term "Seven Cities" is used it includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, and Hampton, Virginia. The Seven Cities of Hampton Roads cover a very large area with multiple government installations and military bases. The Seven Cities are full of historic landmarks and fun-filled activities.
Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach is one of the seven cities of Tidewater. Virginia Beach is a large resort area where many tourists travel to each year. Virginia Beach is known for the Something in The Water concert event. One of the most notable places in Virginia Beach is Mount Trashmore Park.
Norfolk
Norfolk, Virginia is also one of the seven cities of Hampton Roads. Norfolk, VA is home to one of the largest military bases in the world. One of the most notable places in Norfolk is The Virginia Zoo. The Virginia Zoo is home to more than 700 animals, representing over 150 species.
Chesapeake
Chesapeake, VA is another part of the seven cities of Hampton Roads. Part of The Great Dismal Swamp. The city of Chesapeake, VA is one of the best places to live for families. If you get a chance to visit the area then stop by the Chesapeake Arboretum.
Suffolk
Suffolk, Virginia is a city among the seven cities of Tidewater. Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, and smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. Suffolk, VA is known for The Peanut Festival. Suffolk was the 'birthplace' of Mr. Peanut, the mascot of Planters' Peanuts.
Portsmouth
Portsmouth, Virginia is one of the seven cities of Hampton Roads. Portsmouth has a long history as a port town and city. The Olde Towne Business and Historical District is located in the downtown area, where a combination of preservation and redevelopment has been underway. An example is Hawthorn Hotel & Suites at The Governor Dinwiddie Hotel, which was renovated and reopened in 2005 after being closed for more than 10 years. It has been recognized by Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historical Preservation that identifies hotels that have maintained their historical integrity, architecture and ambiance and provides resources for their preservation. The Commodore Richard Dale Monument is located in Olde Towne Portsmouth, Virginia.
Newport News
Newport News is included in the seven cities of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. With many residents employed at the expansive Newport News Shipbuilding, the joint U.S. Air Force-Army installation at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and other military bases and suppliers, the city's economy is very connected to the military. Newport News is a busy city with both high-end rich areas and high-crime slums with lots of drugs.
Hampton
The city of Hampton is another one of the seven cities. Hampton is included in the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area (officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA) which is the 37th largest in the United States. This area, known as "America's First Region", also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk, as well as other smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. One of the most notable places in Hampton is the Langley Speedway which is located at 3165 N Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666.
