The Southside of Hampton Roads consists of five cities. Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk. The land portion of Hampton Roads has been historically divided into two regions, South Hampton Roads on the south side and the Virginia Peninsula on the north side. In Colonial times, and even in the first one hundred fifty years of the USA, much like Virginia as a whole, South Hampton Roads was in an almost constant state of change in terms of local government, largely due to growth, as counties were divided and towns were formed as the population grew. Some towns grew to become cities. Under the state constitutional changes in 1871, extant and future cities in Virginia became independent cities of the counties they had formerly been located within.
Locally, South Hampton Roads is commonly called "the Southside". There are many US military bases located on the Southside of Hampton Roads. For non-locals it is good to first learn about each individual city, if you want to learn more about South Hampton Roads, aka the Southside.
City of Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach is a resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants along its oceanfront. Virginia Beach is widely known to many families nationwide as a vacation safe hotspot. The U.S. Navy's Naval Air Station Oceana (NAS Oceana) and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek (NAB Little Creek) are both located in Virginia Beach, VA. Also, adjacent to Oceana is NAVSEA Dam Neck. There are many things to do in Virginia Beach such as the Virginia Marine Science Museum located on General Booth Blvd. If you have not visited Virginia Beach yet then you should plan a visit as this city can be full of adventure.
City of Norfolk
The city of Norfolk was incorporated in 1705 and is one of the oldest cities in Hampton Roads metropolitan area, and is considered to be the historic, urban, financial, and cultural center of the region. Norfolk is at the core of the metropolitan area, surrounding the Hampton Roads natural harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, officially known as the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA.
Norfolk is known for its old-style Ghent neighborhoods and famous colleges such as Old Dominion University. Many locals visit the Norfolk Scope to watch hockey games. Norfolk is also home to one of the largest naval bases, the Norfolk Navy Base. Downtown Norfolk has a party nightlife with all of the sports bars and many fabulous restaurants for food sampling in the daytime hours. Norfolk has that old town family type of atmosphere.
City of Chesapeake
Chesapeake is included in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC, MSA. One of the cities in the South Hampton Roads, Chesapeake was organized in 1963 by voter referendums approving the political consolidation of the city of South Norfolk with the remnants of the former Norfolk County, which dated to 1691. Chesapeake is also home to U.S. Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress, an auxiliary landing facility for NAS Oceana. Chesapeake is a diverse city in which a few urban areas are located; it also has many square miles of protected farmland, forests, and wetlands, including a substantial portion of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The Chesapeake region was among the first areas settled in the state's colonial era when settlement started from the coast. Along Chesapeake's segment of the Intracoastal Waterway, where the Great Bridge locks marks the transition between the Southern Branch Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal, lies the site of the Battle of Great Bridge. Fought on December 9, 1775.
There are many things to do in the city of Chesapeake. You can go shopping at Chesapeake Square Mall or take your family to a movie at Regal Greenbrier. The people in Chesapeake are warm and friendly and in some areas of Chesapeake, there is a small-town feel that provides adventure along with good home-cooked food.
City of Portsmouth
The Olde Towne Historic District features one of the largest collections of historically significant homes between Alexandria, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina. The city of Portsmouth contains a number of other historic buildings, as well, including the Pass House, which was built in 1841 by Judge James Murdaugh and occupied by Union troops from 1862 to 1865. Formerly, the Naval Hospital Portsmouth, the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is a United States Navy medical center adjacent to the Olde Towne Historic District and Park View Historic District.
Portsmouth, VA offers many activities for family and friends alike. The Children's Museum of Virginia offers family adventure for all ages. Built in 1915, the Lightship Portsmouth served an important role as a mobile guide for mariners throughout the East Coast to help them safely enter the harbor at night. Now a museum, the lightship is full of period uniforms, photographs of its service, and incredible artifacts from its time in use. The city of Portsmouth has a long list of things to do which will keep you on your toes.
City of Suffolk
Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, and smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. With miles of waterfront property on the Nansemond and James rivers, present-day Suffolk was formed in 1974.
There are many activities available in Suffolk, VA. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a variety of Suffolk tours, whether you wish to discover our city by foot, bus, or canoe. Suffolk's up-and-coming arts and culture scene have developed into the perfect blend of local, regional and national artisans. You can go diving either in water or jumping from a plane at Skydive Suffolk, Inc. or Grimsley Scuba Services. At the Constant's Wharf Park & Marina, there is boating, concerts & festivities. Suffolk can be ideal fun for the entire family.
